Whether that will translate into real restrictions on people search tools is anyone’s guess.
And yet, it’s not all doom and data leaks. Some of the newer, more ethical platforms are experimenting with what’s called “verified consent models.” Instead of scraping, they ask users to confirm their data before listing it. They’re betting that accuracy and trust will eventually matter more than volume. It’s a slow shift, but it’s happening. Still, let’s not kid ourselves. AI is about to make people search both smarter and scarier. Imagine tools that can generate a psychological profile from your digital presence or predict your interests based on the tone of your old tweets. That’s not science fiction — startups are already building this. A report by Pew Research Center showed that 81% of Americans feel they have little or no control over the data companies collect about them. That sense of helplessness is why public opinion may soon force lawmakers to act faster.
But here’s something most people don’t realize: people search isn’t inherently bad. The concept itself — being able to find information about others in a transparent way — has real benefits. It helps reunite families, track down fraud, even solve crimes. It’s the lack of regulation and the profit-first design that make it risky. The technology isn’t the villain; it’s how we use it.
I talked with a privacy attorney last year who put it this way: “We’re entering a phase where truth itself has metadata.” I love that line. It captures how everything we share — our LinkedIn updates, our old Myspace photos, our Spotify playlists — becomes a trail of identity that AI can read better than we can. And that means we’re going to need stronger guardrails, both legal and ethical, to decide what’s fair game and what’s personal.
So where does this go next? If you look at what’s happening globally, we’re moving toward a world where individuals will have more control over their data footprints. Europe’s “right to be forgotten” laws are spreading. Canada’s PIPEDA and newer bills like Bill C-27 are taking similar steps. In the U.S., though, it’s still a patchwork — one state at a time, each with slightly different rules. That leaves a lot of gray area for companies that operate nationally.
What’s probably going to happen — and I say this as someone who’s watched tech regulation for years — is that AI-powered people search will split into two worlds. One will be compliant, transparent, built on verified data and explicit consent. The other will live in the shadows, scraping and selling like it always has, just faster and harder to trace. The average user might never notice the difference until something goes wrong — until their data, or their story, gets misused.
But if there’s a silver lining, it’s that awareness is finally catching up. Ten years ago, people barely thought about online privacy. Now it’s a dinner table topic. And once something becomes a social norm — once people start asking, “Who owns my information?” — the system starts to change. Slowly, but surely.
So maybe the future of people search isn’t just about technology or regulation. Maybe it’s about trust. Maybe the companies that survive won’t be the ones with the biggest databases, but the ones that treat data like it belongs to a person — not a product. That’s what I hope, anyway. Because once AI learns everything about us, the least we can ask for is a little honesty in return.
